Dutch physician and artist Hendrik Wiegersma (1891-1969) has maintained a lifelong friendship with Zadkine. In 1926 he visited Zadkine in his studio in Paris where he bought a work. Ossip Zadkine and Hendrik Wiegersma were introduced by Dutch artist Otto van Rees (1884-1957).  In 1930 Wiegersma ordered a double portrait of himself and his wife. A portrait carefully decorated with vegetative motifs. Wiegersma's hand tenderly holds his wife's head. An intimate work that clearly shows the close bond between the subjects portrayed and the artist.
