This gilded wood Buda on a carved stone base by the artist shows the influence of Amadeo Modigliani. Modigliani was an Italian painter and sculptor known for his unique style, which often featured elongated figures and faces. He was born on July 12, 1884, in Livorno, Italy, and died at a young age on January 24, 1920, in Paris, France. Zadkine entertained a friendship with Modigliani, with whom he shared the lean years in 1918, they used to sit on bistro terraces, Modigliani made portraits of people at neighbouring tables which he gave them to earn a franc or two.
